In addition to directing fantastic music videos for such artists as Ted Leo & the Pharmacists and The New Pornographers, New Jersey’s Tom Scharpling hosts an awesome radio show on WFMU that’s simply called “The Best Show on WFMU.” On last night’s special extended broadcast, Scharpling debuted a new song by the Jersey punk group Titus Andronicus with some help from Titus’ singer Patrick Stickles himself.
The song is called “Upon Viewing Oregon’s Landscape With The Flood Of Detritus,” and it’s going to be released officially as a single on a split 7” with Memphis’ Diarrhea Planet, with whom Titus Andronicus will be touring in March. Check out those dates HERE, via Titus Andronicus’ new official tumblr page.
The song’s title seems to be a sly reference to their earlier track “Upon Viewing Breughel’s Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus,” and although the production of the new song doesn’t bear much to the blown out lo-fi aesthetic of The Airing Of Grievances, it does seem to recapture some of the punk energy that was lost between the release of that record in 2008 and the release of 2010’s more mature The Monitor. It also features some string parts that may or may not be played by Owen Pallett.
To stream the track, click the link above and fast forward to the 2:37:00 mark, or, if you want, listen to the whole show. I did earlier today, and it’s definitely worth a listen.
