A music blog, established 2010. My name is Chris Cappello and I live in New Haven. I write reviews, broadcast on the radio, collect vinyl, and generally listen to entirely too much new music. Following this blog for all of that and more.

Tune in to my radio show Left of the Dial on WNHU.net, Fridays from 6 to 8 EST.

"Life Of His Own" by Sharon Van Etten.

Sharon Van Etten - “Life of His Own”

Brooklyn songstress Sharon Van Etten recently released the beautifully desperate single “Leonard” (along with its accompanying music video) from her new LP Tramp, and debuted a brand new b-side along with it. The b-side “Life of His Own” is classic SVE. Like the album standout track “Kevin’s,” this song manages to be incredibly moving by practically staying still. In contrast to the instrumentally rich, bouncy a-side, “Life of His Own” slows things down and keeps it simple with a reserved mix of lightly strummed guitar, piano, and eerie violin. Then of course there’s Sharon Van Etten’s voice, characteristically multi-tracked and touched up with just a hint of natural reverb to emphasize the wounded longing expressed in her lyrics.

Oh, I’m sorry, am I being too flowery in my praise of Ms. Van Etten? Don’t mind me, I’m just falling deeper and deeper in love with her each time she releases new music.
