Left of the Dial Radio Playlist - 8/24/12

Last night my good friends in Milkshakes delivered a great acoustic set on my radio program Left of the Dial on WNHU. After engaging in some jokey banter and answering a few serious interview-style questions, they also took the time to share some music that influenced theirs, along with some of their favorite songs in general. The resulting playlist was a pretty great mix of indie rock, pop-punk, and emo, along with a few hilarious surprises thrown in. Check out the full playlist below and stream it via Spotify at the embedded link at the bottom.

Left of the Dial Radio Playlist - 6/1/12

Last night’s broadcast of Left of the Dial on WNHU was my first radio show of Summer 2012! That’s something to celebrate, right? Left of the Dial Radio Playlist - 3/23/12

Last night’s show went really well. Thanks to everybody who tuned in and enjoyed the programming. Next Friday I will probably not be able to do my show because I’ll be performing in New Haven, but if that ends up not happening for whatever reason, I’ll probably be back in the studio doing another broadcast of Left of the Dial. As always, here’s the playlist from the show last night with links to stream each song. A number of these tracks were culled from the records I listened to while I was in Paris this past week, which I wrote about yesterday HERE. I also devoted the final segment of the show to Mitch Dubey, who was murdered a year ago today here in New Haven, Connecticut.

Anonymous asked: What do you think of Pavement?

I think Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is the second best album of the 1990s and you can hold me to that. The rest of their work is pretty good to great as well; they were a rather consistent band. One of my favorites. I missed the chance to catch them on their recent reunion tour, and I really regret that.

Left of the Dial Radio Playlist - 6/24/11

I forgot to post this playlist from last friday’s Left of the Dial college radio show this weekend, so here it is a few days late. A youtube link to each song is provided when available. As always, this show’s playlist was comprised mostly of music that I had been listening to a lot in the past week, new and old alike. Remember to tune in this Friday from 6 to 8 PM on WNHU to hear the next Left of the Dial broadcast!

I’ll be having the founders of the Red Rash Collective on my show to talk about their work, the state of DIY music in Connecticut, the festival that they’re planning, and more. I’ll also be having Red Rash Collective band The Helveticas on the show the same day for a live in studio acoustic set. Currently listening: Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994)
My terrible afternoon culminated in me collapsing on my bed around 5:30 and sleeping to Explosions in the Sky’s The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place until being violently woken up an hour later. Now I’m sitting here, contemplating identity while listening to Pavement. I’m listening to this record because I needed to hear and feel something real tonight. I can’t stand the the disparity between my digital existence and my physical one. The impression that I give off through the internet is really not representative of who I am.
Yes, I understand the irony of posting this on tumblr. I am definitely going to keep this blog running to the fullest extent, but I’m seriously considering limiting my digital life to just that. Some people depend on this blog, and if you’re one of those awesome people who do, thank you very much and I appreciate your support.

"Range Life" by Pavement.

Song of the Day Number Eighty Eight

Pavement - “Range Life”

I drove around town listening to Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain today and was hit by some serious summer nostalgia. Sometimes I wish my life was a Pavement song.

“Out on my skateboard the night is just humming and the gum smacks are the pulse I’ll follow / if my walkman fades, I’ve got absolutely no one, no one but myself to blame.”

"Cut Your Hair" by Pavement.

Song of the Day Number Fifty

I’m actually in the best mood today. also, 50 days of songs of the day! nice

A band’s big hit can sometimes be a detriment to their creative expression; the songs that get remembered by whatever portion of the casual music-listening population can mar the legacy of great bands, occasionally reducing dense and varied discographies to a poppy three minute track with a “catchy chorus and beat so they can sing along”. Even though “Cut Your Hair”, from Pavement’s honestly perfect 1994 album Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain charted (briefly) and remains perhaps the only song of theirs still remotely ingrained in the mainstream public consciousness, it doesn’t matter at all. Part of this is because “Cut Your Hair” is an amazing song, but it’s mostly because Pavement were always just too cool to let any one track define them.

Vinyl haul… in photo form!

Long time no see!

I’m hanging out in the city for a couple days, and I just got back from Other Music in the East Village and had to post this video.

Sorry I’m so sniffly! I just walked about 40 blocks back to the hotel in the cold. Basically I made a great vinyl record haul. The deals at Other Music are fantastic. There is really nothing like this place in Connecticut, and I think it should serve as a model to everyone for how to run a small and efficient record store. Great prices, great selection, and great people. Also, there was a great Stephin Merritt / Magnetic Fields exhibition piece on display there! That really brightened my day.

See you guys tomorrow at Castevet / Snowing in New Haven! Sorry I mentioned the facebook event page… apparently it’s been deleted! Message me (not anonymously) if you want the address.

Records:

Cap’n Jazz - Analphabetapolothology (1998)

Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted (1992)

Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994)

Husker Du - Zen Arcade (1984)

Big Star - Radio City (1974)
